Pandora was inspired by the designers' own experiences as students living in small studios with limited space. They realized the need for a versatile piece of furniture that could serve multiple purposes, such as studying, sleeping, dining, and entertaining. The idea was to create a product that could transform a single room into different functional spaces, while still being aesthetically pleasing.
What sets Pandora apart from other furniture designs is its ability to seamlessly integrate four essential user needs: relaxation, entertainment, dining, and studying. The system includes a sofa/bed, cushions, folding stools that can also function as footstools, a folding table, two roll-away benches, and a drawer. With these elements, Pandora can adapt to any occasion, making the most out of the available space.
The designers carefully considered the materials and production methods to ensure Pandora's affordability and sustainability. The inner structure of the sofa is made from MDF wood, a cost-effective and environmentally friendly material with a low carbon footprint. The outer surface is covered with curved veneer sheets, giving the sofa a premium look. Despite its many components, Pandora is designed for easy packing, moving, and assembly.
Technical specifications for Pandora include a sofa with dimensions of 2000mm (width) x 1000mm (depth) x 870mm (height), a double bed with dimensions of 2000mm (width) x 1550mm (depth) x 500mm (height), a table measuring 1000mm (width) x 660mm (depth) x 550mm (height), and stools with dimensions of 630mm (width) x 550mm (depth) x 370mm (height).
Operating Pandora is simple and intuitive. In its default state, it functions as a sofa and a bed. To transform it into a double bed, one only needs to pull out the bed frame, lower the bed leg, and place the back row of cushions in the designated openings. The table and bed sheets can be stored in the drawer, and the folding stools and side benches can be easily folded and unfolded as needed.
The Pandora project began in November 2014 in Athens and was completed in January 2015 in Syros. Extensive research and user testing were conducted to ensure the design met the needs of its target audience. The designers observed users in their own homes, conducted questionnaires and interviews, and researched ergonomics and human factors to determine the optimal positions and dimensions for the product.
One of the main challenges faced by the designers was incorporating multiple functions into a single product while maintaining a contemporary and appealing aesthetic. They also aimed to keep the cost low and ensure the product had a sustainable character. The result is Pandora, a beautiful and practical artifact that can enhance any living space.
Pandora's innovative design and functionality have been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category. This award is bestowed upon outstanding designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. Pandora truly exemplifies the best practices in art, science, design, and technology, making it a valuable addition to any modern home.
